Gary has been interested in the Patient Experience for many years. He has been an RN for 33 years and prior to that was an LPN for 6 years in the ICU. His experience has included CCU, Open Heart Recovery, General ICU, PACU, ED and Day Surgery. Twenty six years as an RN has been in the management role from Nurse Manager to Nursing Director. He was very fortunate to work in Pensacola, FL in the 90's under the leadership of a man by the name of Quint Studer as his CEO. During his tenure there, the Baptist Hospital had the highest patient satisfaction in the country. Upon returning to Alabama, Gary was very active on the patient satisfaction committees in the hospitals. In 2008, he graduated with an MSHA from the University of St. Francis. In 2009, he became the nurse manager for CCU at UAB. The last 3 years of his tenure there, he led his team to the highest HCAHPS and Press Ganey scores in the hospital. In February 2015, he became the Inpatient Experience and Leadership Coach for the Office of Patient Experience and Engagement, training directly under the partnership of the Studer Group coaches. Since becoming a coach for the hospital, Gary has focused on Communication and Responsiveness by validating and revalidating with the use of skills labs.
